As you can see I've made my rudder cassette with tiller, the tiller is my spare Flying Fifteen tiller--I love to recycle!
The cassette is not as high tech or as light as some others that have been built, but hey, I love it. The rudder cassette /tiller has marine carpet as an internal liner for the blade which holds the rudder blade nice and firm.
The tiller was spliced to the cassette, the splice is about 8in' (20cm) long. The splice will also be glassed. The top of the cassette is one solid piece of timber ( slot cut for the rudder to pass through) with a 'tongue' of timber 8in' long to epoxy the tiller to. The timber is good old pine--not particularly strong on its own but good once splice joined and then glassed.
As you can see it has not been faired or glassed yet, but th gudgeons have been trial fitted, again, extra strength in the fittings and screws rather than drilling and mounting directly into soft pine even if it has been glassed.
A couple of people have told me they enjoyed the fairing stage of their build (Kevin), YOU ARE NUTS!!!!. I am not enjoying it at all, however, I am enjoying the idea of getting closer to glassing and painting. I have the 2pac primer/ filler sitting waiting & wanting to be used.
The final colour is yet to be decided, most likely will be white or a very very light blue.
See that timber thing sitting on the back of the hull? I don't know what it's called elsewhere but here we call it a TORTURE BOARD and the name is well deserved. It is 2ft long and 4in' wide and has 150grit sand paper velcroed to the bottom---and there is no other tool that will get you as good a finish. No need to go to the gym after using that sucker for 5 minutes.
